Is not through pain that Fabio Borquez built the sadomasochistic body but through sex vertigo. In this collection of nude he plays with the models to try to dismantle the sex object status of women.

With some representations, sometimes bordering pornography, the female body outlines his condition of erotic object and desire at the same time while claiming his emotional side. Beyond sex, therefore, we find in these pictures the dynamics of eroticism.

The female body is an aesthetic tool that serves this artist to reflect on the meaning of beauty as well as on the very meaning of life; for this he plays with the pose, lighting and framing.

From rooms, on balconies or on the street itself, Fabio Borquez characters are primarily expressions of mood and staging. They are, in short, figures captured from a scene in which what counts is the person itself in his nakedness, in its beauty and in its very essence.

This “dangerous” game takes him to compete with the very limits of the exhibit of the female body, sometimes approaching so dizzying to pornographic representations that, ultimately, achieve to turn the story and make at the of the woman a winner. Dominatrix of her own status as an object of desire. But an object that is no longer just in the hands of this photographer that is primarily trying the move the women away from anything that can identified her as an object.

Ie in this collection, we see a little beyond the simple display of naked bodies and the provocative attempt to perceive how the artist tries to break up sex; for which he doesn’t doubt to provide a female body that borders on the sadomasochism as long as she recognize her as desired but also able to control that situation through the destruction of her own sexual body condition.

The nude sample presented here is somewhat paradoxical, since from the explicit sexuality is passed, in some images, to the complete darkness about sex from the shadows incorporated into the photographs. In this sense, all the elements are in the service of the exaltation of women in all its facets.

And it is precisely from some photographs in which the woman is surrounded by shadows, where all the sexual theater falls apart and where its condition of suffering being becomes more sight. Thus, from the anecdotic -from an instant or existential feeling- the aesthetic sense is at the service of expression.

It is in this personal struggle of Fabio Borquez to extract the ideal of beauty from the explicitly sexual in which one understands its way to photograph. Therefore, this study on the body offers a wide variety of frames, compositions and illuminations that desire is able to put into play

The Promiscuous Look

In recent years a debate on the representation of sex in photography has raised, especially when it comes to documentary form. In this sense, there are artists like Larry Clark and Nan Goldin, for example, which have photographed their friends as they made love. Larry Clark is known for his extraordinary series “Tulsa” (who performed in the sixties), which portrays his friends drug pricking or having sex. Nan Goldin, has also led her work to photograph marginal characters, also her friends, such as transvestites, etc.

In the photographs of Larry Clark, some authors have perceived some sublimation of sex. That is, the exhibit of images documenting the sexual life of the photographer and his friends break the erotic sequence to reach a level of frigidity, where the viewer can only be a passive observer or voyeur.

The work of Fabio Borquez in this case does not seem documentary, but simulated at the camera and even there are insinuation of sexual actions (touching, provocative gestures and insinuations), nothing is consumed permanently and sex is paralyzed, suspended. Hence his work on naked is so enigmatic.

Neither uses fetish pornographic elements that enhance aspects since, unless in exceptions, the models are always naked without many ornaments, or sophistication. Just providing the observer their disturbing presence that mobilizes the gaze to a passionate and also thoughtful ground.

Therefore Fabio Borquez is closer to a certain sublimation of sex, much like Joel Peter Witkin with its differences, by contrast, the permanent anesthetization American photographer performs with their always unusual models: dwarves, transvestites, hermaphrodite which emphasizes sexual and grotesque aspects leading them to a quasi-ritual space.

Fabio Borquez space is beyond any mystic or rituality and it’s placed in a space of normality in which the female body is the only thing worth attending and photographing. From this perspective, it is an observer of himself and keeps his self-portrait photographs for anyone who wants to see the nakedness of his feelings and fears.
